It will list for $19.99.
Twentieth Century Fox’s Fox Innovation Lab with RSA Films and The Virtual Reality Company will release its interactive The Martian VR Experience on Tuesday for PlayStation VR and HTC Vive on Steam for $19.99.
Fox’s first commercial release in VR and based on the studio’s 2015 film, The Martian VR Experience debuted earlier this year at CES, but the studio didn’t commit to when it would be released and how it would be priced. At this early stage, the entertainment industry is trying to figure out a business model for VR.
The Martian VR Experience also requires hand-held motion controllers for the interactivity, so when it debuted the full project could only be sampled at select events such as CES and Sundance. HTC Vive and its hand controller launched last spring, and PlayStation VR with its Move controller was released last month. Additionally, Fox plans to make The Martian VR Experience available for Oculus Rift when its Touch controller begins shipping in December.
Executive produced by Ridley Scott and directed by VRC co-founder Robert Stromberg (Maleficent), The Martian VR Experience is a guided narrative that runs 20-30 minutes with viewers participating from astronaut Mark Watney’s perspective, performing tasks that will facilitate his chances for survival on Mars.
“The Martian VR Experience is a testament to the opportunity for filmmakers to connect with audiences in new and deeper ways,” Mike Dunn, president, Fox Home Entertainment and Fox Innovation Lab, said Monday in a statement.
Earlier this year, the project earned a Cannes Silver Lion in digital craft as well as the Association of Independent Commercial Producers’ Next VR Award. Fox is working on additional, not yet disclosed VR productions based on upcoming movies.
