So far, in the last sixteen years, out of eight only three Diwali releases worked at the box office in the romance genre and all three starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead.
Karan Johar’s romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil is up for release this Diwali, October 28, 2016. The film is clashing with Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay, which is an action drama. In the last sixteen years Diwali has seen many big budget releases. And it was surprising to see that in last sixteen years not one Diwali released in romantic genre has worked at the box office, the one which have worked, all had superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Yes! it’s only Shah Rukh Khan who has pulled off romance on Diwali and came out with flying colors. Of course Shah Rukh Khan is making a guest appearance in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, but this time there is Ranbir Kapoor in the lead. Will it work like those Shah Rukh Khan starrers Diwali releases or will it go the other Diwali romantic releases.
Let’s take a look at the films in romance genre from the year 2000 to 2015 and how they fared at the box office:
Mohabbatein
This Aditya Chopra multistarrer was in news for pitting Shahenshah of Bollywood against Badshah of Bollywood. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Jimmy Shergil, the film worked wonders at the box office.
Jeena Sirf Merre Liye
This Tusshar Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor starrer was expected to recreate the magic of their previous Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai. But this badly made Diwali release couldn’t do anything at the box office.
Veer-Zaara
Once again the master of Diwali releases Shah Rukh Khan returned at the box office with another romantic saga and boy what a film it was. The film was a blockbuster and was much loved for its music and the effective portrayal.
Kyon Ki…It’s Fate
This weirdly titled film, a remake of One Flew Over Cuckoo’s Nest, was a badly made film and was also a disaster at the box office. Even Salman Khan couldn’t pull off romance as a genre on Diwali.
Jaan-E-Mann
This film which was said to be much ahead of its time couldn’t pull audience into the theatre. Despite the presence of superstars like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar the film was an outright flop.
Saawariya
This is the only Ranbir Kapoor Diwali release before the upcoming Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and we all know his first film was an outright flop. The film was rejected for its cringeworthy plot and tinted visuals.
Main Aur Mrs Khanna
Starring Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Sohail Khan, this film was a disaster from the word go. The only thing which was remembered from this film was Preity Zinta’s item song
Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Once again it was Shah Rukh Khan’s romantic film that worked at the box office. This Yash Chopra swan song was in controversies for its clash with Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar and it was this romantic saga that emerged victorious. Though, both the films were success.
So far, in the last sixteen years, out of eight only three Diwali releases worked at the box office in the romance genre and all three starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. Now we’ll just wait and watch if Ranbir Kapoor will be able to break the norm, or the Shah Rukh Khan luck will work in his favour. Till then keep following BollywoodLife and don’t forget to catch the review of the two films right here.
